What is AMOLED?
The current top-end smartphones available in the market have either IPS or LCD displays with resolution of 1920×1080 pixels. IPS means in which black and white pixels are divided into different zones that are made light-emitting in the same location. However, unlike the current standard panel of IPS that has red, green, blue, and white subpixels, OLED has only one pixel in a panel. It uses the entire screen area of a handset to form one pixel. Now you know that an AMOLED display refers to the pixel division in a panel and pixels are light-emitting in a designated area. AMOLED panels are flexible.
How does AMOLED Work?
OLED displays consists of a thin sheet of active material and back cover. The front face of the front cover is called active display. A thin film of active material is sandwiched between a transparent conducting layer and back cover. As the active material is transparent, it can reflect the light and transmit it to the back cover where it can be used as a light emitting material. The transparent conductive layer and the back cover combine as a plastic substrate. The front face of the front cover is active and is processed into a bright and very bright picture when the image is displayed.
AMOLED Advantages :
In the 1950s, there was an ink technology called TFT. This was made popular by the watch industry for its ability to illuminate timepieces. However, after two generations of these watches, more and more timepieces started exhibiting severe health and mechanical problems. Many watch companies were still using TFT technology. This was based on the assumption that even at lower temperatures TFT would not get damaged. However, the Japanese watch industry saw the issue and developed an alternate display that would be less susceptible to blistering or chafing. This is what led to the development of AMOLED display technology.
Disadvantages of AMOLED :
AMOLED is highly power-intensive. Therefore, its use requires the utmost power efficient processor to run smoothly, especially at low brightness settings. This is because the chipset needs to carry out intensive computation for supporting AMOLED display with a long battery life. Non-reflective AMOLED display has a one-of-its-kind reflective structure that is reflective on both ends, but it doesn’t reflect light evenly across the display’s surface, so if you view the same side at a different angle, the image is partially obstructed. Irregularly shaped Since AMOLED is formed of thin films, the light that shines through can be obstructed due to individual pixels of the screen. If you see a black pixel, this is because a pixel is in an irregularly shaped part of the screen.
It is also pertinent to state that if we do not decide that or the market allows us to treat the entire market as distinct segments and only distinguish between CDMA, GSM and LTE only, then we may be keeping our fingers crossed for a good future. However, this would be a historical anomaly and we have already seen the market totally being divided and considered four separate markets. For example, the 3G network was a collection of the legacy GSM bands, CDMA (ASUS and HTC are two well known example), and LTE (Verizon, AT&T and Sprint).
