An airborne early warning and control system is an airborne radar picket system designed to detect aircraft, ships, vehicles, missiles, and other incoming projectiles at long ranges. AWACS aids in several different tasks such as destroying incoming missiles, advising fighter aircraft in battle, and giving pilots more time to make a move. It’s called AWACS because of the massive military aircraft which it is mounted on, usually of the Boeing 707 or 757 series. It was first revealed in 1956 as a development of the earlier Los Angeles AN/TPS-45 and also served as a prototype for the E-3 Sentry, which started production in 1969. The AWACS is a "multistage early warning, early detection, and control system that provides early warning of incoming missiles and hostile aircraft. It communicates using military communications satellites and ground station communications links to accurately locate and track incoming threats. In the 1980s, the AWACS was put on a new course. It began as a radar-based system, capable of staying airborne for eight hours at a time, for up to 30 days a month, with crews of eight to 14 people at a time. In 1988, the U.S. Army decided to upgrade this system to be able to spy on China's air force and navy during the long summers.
The history of the AWACS began during the Cold War era, when the Soviets placed a system called SA-2 Guideline in Cuba. The American Air force wanted to prevent the missiles from reaching American territory, so the US initiated a project to build a Radar Interceptor (RI) to warn aircraft. The first incarnation of the idea was the F-117A, which entered service in 1980. F-117A was a fixed-wing jet used to patrol and hunt for the missiles in the Soviet Union. Later, in the 1980s, the US Air Force started an experimental program with the Boeing 737 to introduce the radar and electronic jamming payload in an aircraft. The project was named CASA (Constant Controllable Interceptor). The first CASA flight took place in 1990.
The story of the American Airborne Warning And Control System, or AWACS, began in the late 1950s when the US and British governments began working together to protect the West Coast from Soviet attack. On August 8th, 1957, the Soviet Union launched the first human into space, Yuri Gagarin. On August 12th, the first test of a Soviet Bombers-Bombers exercise took place at Tonopah Test Range in Nevada. On August 13th, an US Air Force weather reconnaissance plane, a Douglas RB-66, was given the unusual task of flying back and forth along the Soviet coast and reporting on what they were doing. This reconnaissance gave the Americans a glimpse into the Russians plans to launch their first manned spaceflight, Yuri Gagarin.
