BHEL is one of the largest engineering and manufacturing companies of its kind in India engaged in design, engineering, construction, testing, commissioning . BHEL was incorporated in 1951 as a joint venture between the Government of India and the American Electric Power Company (AEP). Today, it is among the top 50 global players in the power generation business and has been providing technology, engineering, solutions and services in five business segments – power generation, industrial solutions, transmission & distribution, nuclear & defence & security.
What does BHEL do?

BHEL’s core business is the manufacture and sale of a range of power generation equipment including electrical transformers, turbine engines, generators, compressed air plants, gas turbine engine, hydraulic turbines, gas compressors, engine control systems, linear compressors, and industrial vacuum pumps. In addition to manufacturing and sale, BHEL offers a wide range of research and development services including engineering design, mechanical design, system integration, experimental development, system simulation, industrial prototype development, and technology transfer to Indian industry and related technology. BHEL has installed more than 7,00,000 MWs of power generation in 42 countries, to date, including 45,000 MWs of power generation in India.

By the year 2022, the Manufacturing industry is expected to create new direct employment of over 1.3 million across the country. In the process, the total indirect employment will increase to 2.3 million, which will entail a substantial increase in earnings and national income. BHEL has been facing challenges in the past few years. Despite having an impressive track record of execution and delivery, it has not been able to earn the respect and trust of its customers. As its demand for projects have dwindled, it has been losing out on project execution contracts which were in high demand. The company’s accumulated losses have been mounting as its market share has been decreasing over the years. Financial Performance Overview For FY17, BHEL has reported a consolidated net loss of ₹1,656 crore, as against a profit of ₹1,084 crore in the previous fiscal. The company’s consolidated revenues during FY17 declined to ₹31,986 crore from ₹38,763 crore in FY16.
