ENIAC: A Short History of the First Computer In 1944, researchers at the American University of Beirut developed a German-built Colossus electronic computing machine, code named Hurricane. This machine was based on the Redoubt’s Oberwolfach 20, a machine that could store around 300,000 symbols in its 12,000 rows of 6-bit cells. These cells represented 3-bit words. The Hurricane allowed a machine to be programmed to execute a program or set of instructions based on the characters entered. In the 1940s, the United States knew that the Germans were working on an electronic computing machine code-named Mark I. In order to learn about the Mark I, scientists at Massachusetts Institute of Technology built a machine called the Electronic Delay Storage Automatic Calculator.
The Birth of ENIAC :
In 1946, a team of government scientists led by John Mauchly began to design a machine that would be able to carry out calculations more efficiently than any machine at the time. He proposed that it would cost about $400,000 to build, and in 1951 it was authorized to be built. It was completed in 1952. The total cost of the project was about $2.7 million, of which $600,000 was the government’s investment, and the other $2.4 million was from private donors. John Mauchly, who had been designing adding machines since 1936, presented the idea of building a computer to the government’s Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) in 1946. Mauchly had never heard of a general-purpose computer before, so he didn’t know the machine would actually become a computer.
The First Computers :
In the early 1960’s, computer technology was in its infancy and it was mostly a hobbyist endeavor. John Mauchly invented the world’s first computer and code-named it ENIAC which stood for Electric Calculator at the Indiana University. He wanted it to be so powerful that it would be able to perform a variety of calculations. However, ENIAC’s wiring and software were too complicated for such a supercomputer, so Mauchly began selling it off to government laboratories. A year later he started work on a successor called UNIVAC which was designed with a more modular design and less wiring to reduce the size of the machine. It became the first ever commercially successful computer after it went into operation in 1950.
The Invention of ENIAC :
The first electronic digital computing device was developed in 1940s-50s. It used vacuum tubes that were connected to each other by twisted-pair wiring. The three main parts of the device were its logic program, instruction processor and the memory. At the end of the Second World War, the machine was used in an early variant of radar, known as the UNIVAC I, with 400,000 vacuum tubes and 12,000 switches. NORAD was a computer system created to track ICBMs, build models, analyse war plans, and provide commands to military personnel, early warning and naval analysis. The mission of NORAD was to monitor the ground level nuclear threats coming from the Soviet Union.
ENIAC’s Legacy :
The number is from 1953 – the year that ENIAC was introduced to the public. The first hypertext link to be made, posted by Christopher Buckley, is a 1972 sequence by Hayek. It is: (Mises) Who Is To Say?
The above information provides a brief introduction to the historical contributions of the ENIAC, the electronic computer programmable in 1946. It is useful to note that these machines still hold a prominent place in science and technology. On a personal note, I find it interesting that some of the conceptual model that I had in mind regarding an integrated circuit in 1955 were similar to the ‘dot’ and ‘dotless’ notation for a sequence of stored instructions. While ENIAC and other “electric” computers were built for (at least the most part) practical purposes, it is noteworthy that these machines have still played a significant role in the world of computers.
