What is ISI?

ISI is the abbreviation of the Hindi phrase ISI, meaning “Indian Standard”. ISI and BIS are the two most recognised abbreviation abbreviations in India, as both ISI and BIS are widely used in India. ISI is in contrast to ISO, ISO, or ISO-9002, which are the designations of ISO Standards, International Standards and Conformity Assessment Programs respectively, and other standards like CIQR, ISO/IEC 13485 and ISO 14001. How to Get ISI Mark An ISI mark has three letters, SI, SII and SIIII, which can be represented as SI, S, I and II, respectively. The letter SI represents a single digit (equivalent to the ISO standard ISO 4917) and stands for Standard Indicator for Indian Standards.

How does ISI mark work?

ISI mark is designed to certify that a product complies with an ISI standard, specifically: ISI (SGA 7010) – Watertight Sealing and waterproofing (essential in the building and construction industry) ISI (MSE 12001) – Moldability and Fluidity (essential in the electronics industry) ISI (MIL-STD 810G) – Protection from shock and vibration, protection from electricity, temperature extremes and other environmental hazards ISI (IAI 5307) – Aluminium dielectric material for electronic products The mark helps in a chain of confirmation that a product complies with the ISI standard. This helps in creating trust, which helps in the smooth sale and use of the product. Additionally, it also helps with the credibility of the product. It is the ‘seal of approval’ that an ISI product gets.

ISI Mark Standards

BIS -ISI marks have been put together based on five volumes (No. V5 to No. V12) of BIS Standard. The standard sets out the requirements for ISI mark certification. Manufacturers need to carry out any ISI certification which might include a BIS Third party verification for ISI markings. An ISI mark can be either indented in the product or free hand on the product surface. The indented mark signifies a source product of manufacture. The free hand mark denotes an intermediate product of manufacture. No ISI Mark Required Many companies make use of the ISI mark to get their product certified by an importing country. The India government, being the importing country, can issue export permits for these products.

ISI Mark Certification

The ISI mark has two possible designs that are suitable for different kinds of items and products:

Design A has the letters ISI in the center of the circle while Design B has ISI stamped into the center of the circle as well.

Ideally the ISI mark has two levels: ISO : ISI Mark is mandatory for all industrial product items intended for use in a member country of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). : ISI Mark is mandatory for all industrial product items intended for use in a member country of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

Conclusion
The automotive component suppliers in India are likely to be able to comply with these standards better if they take the certified ISO 9001:2015[2] qualification in addition to their ISO 9001:2008 certification. The certification of ISO 14001:2015 is expected to add more value to the already accepted ISO 9001:2008 certification.
