What is a LAN?
LAN stands for Local Area Network. This network includes all the computers located at a certain location within the same building, such as a residential home, campus, academic building, etc. In reality, it may be your personal laptop or the LAN from the server you use for your website. This is why it is so important to understand how a LAN works and to set it up correctly. Let’s say you own a small business and your office is located in a two-story house. You have two computers in the office. Your office has an internet connection (ie: ADSL) and the LAN cable that connects to your laptop. Your personal laptop and the LAN cable run from the office to the bedroom, where your baby is sleeping. The time is around 10:30 AM. Your baby is about 7 months old and still napping.
What are the benefits of having a LAN?
It is the most cost effective way of connecting computers within an office or within a school or workplace. It increases accessibility as almost all of these computers are on the same network. A LAN allows people to share files easily. It can also provide redundant network storage through a locally attached hard drive. How to create a LAN
The physical device used to create a LAN is called an ethernet switch. A switch is connected to your router which connects to your computer. The router also connects to the switch. In most cases the router will also be connected to a printer, scanner and/or other peripherals that provide services that can be provided from the LAN. You should have an ethernet cable attached to your router and your ethernet cable should be within reach. The Ethernet cable should be less than 18″ long. The purpose of your LAN is to provide computer services to everyone within your local area network. Every computer in your LAN should be capable of establishing a connection to another computer on your LAN.
How to use a LAN
In a simple LAN we have a device (hardware or software) that we can connect to in order to connect to a computer (PC, laptop, tablet or mobile phone) that are more distant than the local area network. For example, a Wi-Fi enabled smartphone will not allow you to make a call on another mobile phone network but this is not the case if you can connect a Wi-Fi enabled smartphone to another router to make a call. A local area network can be made up of many devices such as PCs, tablets, laptops and phones but the user only connects to one or several devices. The links within a LAN can be wired or wireless.
