What is the Line of Control?
LOC can mean several things, but it is typically used to refer to the demarcation line between India and Pakistan, which separates the Pakistani controlled region of Kashmir from Indian controlled Kashmir, and the fortified border between the two nations, along which weapons and soldiers from both sides may enter and exit the region. Why the Line of Control Is Important The LoC is a military control line between the Indian and Pakistani controlled parts of the former princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, which is now a part of India. The line of control is regarded by both countries as the international border. However, India and Pakistan are not currently in a state of war.
History-Line of Control :
Line of Control military control line is between India and Pakistan .LOC refers to the lines of control in this context. LOC is a military control line between the Indian and Pakistani controlled parts of the former princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, formed as per the Simla Agreement in August 1972. In 1974, it became an international border between India and Pakistan. LOC also refers to the jatrika which runs across the length of India-Pakistan border. It is more of a border than a line, and refers to a frontier fortification. The long jatrika not only separates India and Pakistan, but also that the countries share a cultural and geographical boundary.
Why is the Line of Control important?
The LOC is the only contact line between India and Pakistan that exists across the actual geography of the state. How it came to be? The Ceasefire Agreement signed between India and Pakistan on the 3rd August 2003 identified seven withdrawal lines or LOCs between the two sides of Kashmir. What are the LOCs? The seven lines are at Dulbahadur, Bramly, Bansda, Tangdhar, Kargil, Nachisar and Lipa. How far have the LOCs been completed? The Dulbahadur Line was inaugurated in 2003, while the Bramly and Nachisar were completed in 2009. The rest of the lines have been under construction or are incomplete. What about LOC at Kargil?
The Line of Control is not a ‘border’ :
For an area as geographically diverse as the border between India and Pakistan, there is not really a line. Instead, the Indian side of the line of control covers both the Jammu and Kashmir and the Indian-administered Kashmir as well as a swath of disputed land known as the de facto ‘Rann of Kutch’ which lies between India and Pakistan. Historically the LoC has seen many skirmishes and attempts at peace. But as India and Pakistan find themselves at loggerheads over the Kashmir region, recent attacks by both countries have rattled relations on the LoC. In March 2016 a deadly attack on Indian security forces at Uri, Jammu and Kashmir left 19 soldiers dead, sparking a major military retaliation from the Indian Army.
Sections of the region have been caught in a proxy war between India and Pakistan for decades. Hundreds of soldiers have lost their lives in this border conflict. There is an agreement that neither the countries will cross the LOC. Despite that, there have been continuous ceasefire violations which are continuous. In spite of that, there are moves to celebrate Diwali festival as well as Eid festival. In both these festivals, sweets and various gifts are exchanged.
