What is NIC?
Network Interface Controller (NIC) is short for network interface controller. It’s the device you plug into your computer when you want to network with other computers on your network. Today, most computers use a built-in network interface controller. But for people wanting to connect to an old or unusual computer, sometimes you need an external network interface card. We have no use for a fancy, proprietary network interface card (NIC) today, so what is the NIC of old used for? That would be the interface card that plugs into your PC’s CPU to facilitate a network connection. The native network interface controller is called a USB-bus adapter (BUS adapter) and it typically handles USB 2.0.
NIC and the CPU
The original versions of NICs were implemented in CPUs, so the name is actually short for processor integrated circuit. Early versions of an Integrated Memory Engine was known as the Integrated Memory Controller. In general, the NIC is a CPU with RAM access and management capabilities added to it. NICs were meant to speed up the access to the processor and memory chips of a computer system. They are often implemented as a chip on the motherboard, such as on the Gigabyte Z170 Aorus Pro motherboard pictured above, but can be external like in this case. When the 80486 processor was launched in 1985, there were approximately 350,000,000 of them sold.
NIC and the Network
Network interface controllers were originally designed to interface a computer to a network. For example, the UART interface on some early IBM PC motherboards included an interface controller to handle the data transfers from the bus interface to the PC, and control interrupts. Later, the number of devices connected to the computer bus and the number of computer systems connected to the network meant that a simpler device that could handle all of the necessary data transfers was needed. Eventually, physical NICs became the standard. A physical NIC provides computer systems with a number of devices that are connected to the network at one time, which results in a much more efficient network.
NIC and the OS
So what does an interface controller actually do, you ask? Here’s how we know: When a NIC is used by the operating system, an access or direct-attached disk image is mounted on the NIC for use by a driver. The disk image loads and runs the operating system with a minimized application in RAM. The OS is essentially compiled into a very small executable program. When the driver is finished loading the operating system, the application is unloaded. The kernel then gets the next disk image that’s mounted on the NIC and loads it as needed. This cycle continues until the application runs out of disk space. The term NIC is short for network interface controller. The term NIC, or similar, has long been used to describe the physical hardware component.
Although this article is primarily about graphics cards, I will do my best to explain the terms they use, particularly the usage of the words “external” and “internal”. For the purpose of this article, external refers to “storage and cooling”, or how a card is physically connected to a computer, and how the graphics card hardware is configured. Internal refers to “logical access”, or how the actual graphics card components are constructed within the computer. For example, a typical graphics card might have a graphics processor (GPU) and memory on one side, with the video memory on the other side. By the end of this article, you should have a good understanding of what the two terms mean, as well as of how their meanings and usages can vary depending on the use and context.
