National Service Scheme (NSS) was established as a full-fledged agency by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in its own statute on 11 October, 1974. A nationwide extra-curricular program which begins in schools and then continues in college and universities. It involves a wide variety of activities, ranging from promoting self-improvement, nationalism, community service, sports, national unity, and artistic skills. Before conducting the National Service Scheme a 'Pattaramb' (discussion and decision) is also called as the Preparation Round. The Preparing Round is conducted in a school before the actual beginning of NSS. The agenda of the Preparation Round is to select students with better grades to take up selected courses.

In addition to the normal duties of the Youth Affairs and Sports Department, the department was mandated to implement programs for greater public service among the youth. There are a total of twenty-two organizations that are affiliated to NSS and carry out the different tasks prescribed by the National Service Scheme. This is not all. All the young men and women who are in the age bracket of 18-23 years are eligible for NSS. Apart from the typical camp activities, the service organizations or branches do a number of other activities.
NSS aims to inculcate in young India a sense of patriotism and social responsibility among the young. NSS focuses on five major areas - Career; Public service; Spiritual and National fitness; Good character and citizenship; National unity and identity. NSS is also helping the Government achieve its objective of skill development. Many universities and vocational colleges have outsourced activities under NSS to raise quality of job candidates and graduates. All one needs is a minimum of 890 hours of community service, 40 hours of self development, and 40 hours of community service.
Being part of NSS gives you unique opportunity to develop leadership, social, citizenship skills and many more skills and capabilities in students of class 10th to 15th.You can join the National Service Scheme at different levels i.e. Sub-inspector of Police (Ser), Sub-Inspector of Railway Police Force (Sur), Assistant Sub Inspector of Police (SI) and Assistant Sub Inspector of Police (ASI) . You can even join the Higher National Diploma (HND) Program. Then they can study up to BS Sc. in any engineering college. If you are going for an academic degree in commerce and art, then you can join the HND Program. Then they can go for an MA in any other college.
Apply to the recruitment board of the group. In a particular year a national service is organised based on the SSC-cadre exam. A set number of candidates will be selected from each group, and their exam results will be uploaded on SSC Board website for candidates to compare with other candidates.
