What is PSLV?
The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle is an inter-planetary launch vehicle developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). This launch vehicle is capable of sending satellites weighing up to 6.7 tonnes to an orbit close to Earth. PSLV was first tested in September 1992 and made its maiden flight in September 1993. Since then, over 170 launches have been conducted, making it the most successful launch vehicle in the world. In 2014, PSLV carried a record-breaking 104 satellites to space. How Is PSLV Different From Other Rockets? On the outside, PSLV looks like any other launch vehicle. However, at the heart of this launch vehicle is a cryogenic engine that takes the vehicle on to the highest velocity before safely landing it back on Earth.
Why was PSLV developed?
After India’s independence, various launch vehicles were tried by the country, but most of them failed to deliver satisfactory results. As the country has a very thin atmosphere, each rocket had to carry only a small amount of weight which created challenges to create a powerful and reliable launch vehicle. PSLV was developed to address these issues. Inventor: Prof K Radhakrishnan As NASA wanted to launch a scientific satellite in 1972, the country launched in 1971 a sounding rocket from India’s first orbital launch centre, Sriharikota. However, this was a failure, and further attempt was made with the unmanned sounding rocket from the southern spaceport, Andhra Pradesh.
What is PSLV’s significance?
As compared to other types of launchers, it’s economical in terms of the launch costs and how far it can travel. On the contrary, it has less control capabilities, like the Soyuz, therefore having limited payload capability. Is PSLV a short-range, low Earth orbit vehicle? PSLV is a medium-Earth orbit launch vehicle. Its specific orbit velocity ranges between the sub-GEO and GEO range. What is the comparison between PSLV and SpaceX? For the launch of SES-9, PSLV was the less expensive option. Its launch cost was only a little more than that of SpaceX’s Falcon 9. Has there been a competition between the two? There have been very few competitions between the two companies.
What is the PSLV’s length?
The PSLV-C30 is 30 meters long. How much does it weigh? The rocket weighs 320 tonnes.
Who is PSLV’s manufacturer?
India’s space agency, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), manufactures the PSLV. The ISRO developed the rocket in 1992 to launch satellite and also successfully tested the rocket in 1994. “In 2004, the Indian Space Research Organisation launched a joint mission with Japan’s JAXA. The Indian Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) is the rocket that sent the Chandrayaan-1 space probe to orbit the moon in 2008,” according to this report published by National Geographic. The rocket uses solid and liquid stages and both have a diameter of 2.2 meters. On the liquid stage, the PSLV holds 493 liters of liquid propellant. On the solid stage, the rocket is able to hold a payload of 1,120 kilograms (2,992 pounds).
PSLV is an expendable launch vehicle designed to launch satellites into polar Sun Synchronous Orbit. PSLV is a very capable launch vehicle used by India to launch a large number of satellites in quick succession. PSLV launches from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. The first and second stages of PSLV are entirely liquid based while the third and fourth stages are solid. PSLV has four stages while the fifth stage is a liquid fueled. A total of 46 missions have been launched with the first launch occurring in 1989. Currently, around 25 satellites are launched by PSLV every year.
