What is RAM [Random-access memory]?
Random-access memory is a form of computer memory that can be read and changed in any order, typically used to store working data and machine code. Its basic principle is that you can see every bit of memory as a single piece of information. So if I tell you that I have four gigabytes of memory, you can physically see the entire amount of RAM as four gigabytes of memory; you’re not hearing more or less than that. (This is one reason why people often refer to RAM , since you can measure the amount of RAM by counting the bits.) Random-access memory is also called RAM, because that’s how it is named. Random-access memory shares a lot of similarities with other types of memory, like magnetic disk drives, DVD-drives, and flash memory, but RAM has more benefits.
What is the difference between RAM and ROM ?
ROM (Hard Disk) is commonly used to store huge amounts of data — think disk drives — and access it quickly. How do you transfer data from RAM to your hard disk? Your operating system performs a device memory swap when you move data between memory and the hard disk.
How do you transfer data from RAM to your hard disk? A specialized disk device called a memory stick will let you copy large amounts of data directly from your RAM to your hard disk.
What are File-Systems? A computer’s operating system stores files in a file system. In most cases, these files are called “text” or “data files.” Most computer files are stored in some kind of file system.
Why is RAM so important?
When you access the RAM in your computer, the system acts like a hard drive, processing data from the keyboard or mouse and passing it on to the computer’s main memory to be stored. RAM doesn’t have a fixed location in your computer, but instead is spread across the system as if it’s broken into pieces and can be accessed at will. Most computers, including Apple Macs, have a variety of different RAM amounts, and they will be marked by a number, such as 256MB or 4GB. I hear your RAM was 64GB. How do you know? For most users, a hard drive holds the vast majority of a computer’s storage space. Disk drives also offer faster speeds and are much cheaper to replace than RAM.
How much RAM do I need?
Well that depends, but if you’re looking for a base level of memory, this is where to start: 1GB is enough for pretty much any modern processor. It might be enough for your phone, too. But if you’re looking for something that can handle a larger, streaming media system, or other CPU-heavy tasks, we’d recommend moving up to at least 4GB. This may be more than some of your games and apps can take, but you’ll still be able to run your favorite titles and most streaming media services. What is the difference between RAM and hard disk space? They’re two distinct pieces of computing hardware, and the only real differences between them are the specs. RAM can be much faster, but is far less common, generally reserved for laptops.
An ASCII calculator has been replaced by a TI-99/4A or similar machine, the result of which is vastly more reliable and much faster than a calculator using a built-in copier.
