SDO stands for Sub Divisional Officer. His duty is to control the developmental projects. He is a highly qualified officer.He has been selected by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) through a written examination. He reports to the District Magistrate of the division. He is directly answerable to the government of the state for the quality of development projects in the area. Reason for changing the name Before the formation of U.P. The SDO’s name was called Provincial officer (PO).

After securing senior secondary education (10+2), a candidate is eligible for this position. According to the rules a candidate should be a graduate with two years of experience in the civil services. The minimum qualification required for this job is senior secondary education (10+2) from a recognized Board of Studies, University or equivalent. To be successful in the examination a candidate should not have spent more than four years in any government office during the period of his or her service. He or she should not be a graduate (other than PGDPCS with 2 years of experience) with 2 years of experience. Successful candidates are issued a licence to prosecute for one year, which is renewable. A person who has been awarded the IPS can also apply for the job.
