FAQs About AIAA:
The AIAA is the world’s largest professional society for the field of aerospace engineering. It consists of over 10,000 individual members and more than 100 associate organizations. Its board is composed of 250 members, including the President of the United States, the Secretary of the Air Force, and the Secretary of Defense. Members of the public have the opportunity to join the AIAA and become a member or associate member. What are the three fields of aerospace engineering? While they all deal with aircraft and aircraft technology, these are the three fields of aerospace engineering: Avionics Engineering: Avionics engineers work with aircraft electronics systems to deliver superior performance and safety while minimizing cost.
Anyone who holds a U.S. engineering degree (doctorate or bachelors) and an active professional or student membership in a professional or academic society is eligible for membership in the AIAA. Currently, there are 1.7 million members worldwide. What qualifications are necessary for a person to be eligible to join AIAA? In order to qualify to be elected to the AIAA, one must: Become an AIAA member. Obtain a published paper in the Aeronautical Sciences or one of the technical journals listed by AIAA. This requirement does not appear to be any longer than one year. Participate in a national or international aerospace or space related design competition.
Here's how: Go to Member Center and look for the AIAA section. Once you've signed up, be sure to receive an email from the AIAA to confirm your membership. How much does membership cost? $72 per year
How do I become a member of the AIAA as an individual? There are no individual memberships, only corporate, educational and government (NASA and Air Force, for example) memberships.
You can apply for a Scholarships for Innovation, Education and Training (SIFE), scholarships that support education and learning of aeronautical engineering and space sciences to the less-fortunate children of families of AIAA members. You can also apply for the AIAA Medallion Award. The award is made in recognition of exemplary accomplishment in aerospace engineering. The AIAA Golden Anniversary Awards, once again made possible by a generous donation from the AIAA Foundation, recognize exceptional contributions of individuals, and organizations that have made significant contributions to the advancement of aerospace engineering and support of the profession and community.
No one is ever turned away from the AIAA. However, since its founding in 1913, the AIAA has used the practice of "hard money" membership, meaning the cost of joining is the cost of one year's worth of dues. Although there are different variations, that sum is generally in the ballpark of $50, $100, or $200. Typically, those dues are made a year in advance and are paid up through the first day of the year following that particular year, although there are circumstances under which dues are paid earlier or later than that. There is no annual membership renewal fee.
The AIAA would prefer to see you join as soon as possible, but there is no concrete deadline. At a minimum, you should sign up by the end of each year, but the deadline may be longer
